Japan, region by region
Most trips cover four cities. Japan has forty-seven prefectures. Here are the regions we plan most often, with when to go and how long to stay.

Kanto
Tokyo
Neon energy, world-class shopping, teamLab digital art and sushi omakase.
Stay: 3 to 4 nights for a first visit; 5 if you want Tokyo Disney or a day trip to Nikko or Kamakura.

Kansai
Kyoto
Temples, geisha districts, Fushimi Inari and the tea ceremony.
Stay: 3 nights at minimum; 4 if you add a day trip to Nara.

Kansai
Osaka
Japan’s food capital: street food, Dotonbori’s neon canal and nightlife.
Stay: 2 nights, or 3 with Universal Studios Japan.

Chubu and Kanagawa
Fuji and Hakone
The postcard view, onsen towns and Lake Ashi.
Stay: 1 to 2 nights. One night in a ryokan is strongly recommended.

Hokuriku
Kanazawa
Samurai and geisha districts and Kenroku-en, one of Japan’s three great gardens.
Stay: 1 to 2 nights.

Japan Alps
Takayama and Shirakawa-go
Thatched-roof mountain villages the fixed-departure circuit skips.
Stay: 1 to 2 nights in Takayama, with Shirakawa-go as a stop on the way to or from Kanazawa.

Northern Japan
Hokkaido
Powder snow, lavender fields and Japan’s best seafood, at a different pace.
Stay: 4 to 6 nights.

Southern islands
Okinawa
Tropical islands and coral reefs most operators never mention.
Stay: 3 to 5 nights.
