Overview
Kyoto was Japan’s capital for over a thousand years and is still its cultural heart, with hundreds of temples and shrines, preserved wooden streets, gardens and traditional crafts.
It is also one of the busiest places in Japan, so timing matters. Visiting key temples early in the morning and staying in the right area makes a big difference.

Visit the famous temples early, choose quieter alternatives for some sights, and travel in May, June, October or winter rather than peak blossom and foliage weeks.
